Colourful Icelandic sheep – Get to know the wool colours of the Icelandic sheep with us. We, Icelandic Lamb want to tell you the whole story behind your food and our product.
Among Iceland’s windswept hills and moss-covered lava fields, flocks of sheep have grazed freely for centuries. Shaping not only the island’s landscape but also its culture. These animals are more than just livestock they are living symbols of Iceland’s deep connection to nature, resilience, and tradition. Each sheep carries a story woven into its wool, a reflection of the land’s raw beauty and untamed spirit.
One of the most striking things about Icelandic sheep is the remarkable diversity found in their fleece. While many breeds around the world are known for uniformity, Icelandic sheep celebrate variety. Their coats seem to mirror the changing light and textures of the island itself from the volcanic earth to the Arctic sky. Farmers, spinners, and knitters alike have long admired this natural spectrum. Which gives Icelandic wool its unique charm and endless creative possibilities.

The colour, that probably everyone thinks about, when they talk about sheep. Is the colour white. Called “Hvít” in Icelandic. The Sheep that you see on the picture does not have horns, that is called “Kollótt” in Icelandic. (picture 1)

White sheep with tan fibers are called “Gul”, because they look almost yellow. (picture 2)

Then we have Black sheep called “Svört”. The sheep on picture 3 is a fullgrown sheep, other than the sheep on picture 1 and 2, which are about half a year old.
